Vermicomposting: Step-by-Step Guide and Pricing

It is the process of using earthworms to decompose organic waste into a high-quality compost called vermicast. This nutrient-rich material is an excellent natural fertilizer for plants.

What is Vermicomposting?

Vermicompost Fertilizer

It is the process of using various species of worms, usually red wigglers, to decompose organic waste into a high-quality compost known as vermicompost. which is rich in nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Vermiculture involves cultivating earthworms to facilitate this composting process.

What is Vermiculture?

Vermiculture means “worm farming.” It involves raising earthworms to convert organic waste into valuable compost. These worms excrete nutrient-rich vermicast, which improves soil fertility and plant health.

Vermicomposting in Different Languages

For non-English speakers, here are some translations:

वर्मी कंपोस्ट (Hindi): It is referred to as केंचुआ खाद in Hindi

Gandul Khat (Marathi): In Marathi, It is known as “गांडूळ खत”

Preparation

Materials Needed

  1. Plastic or concrete tank (size depends on available raw materials)
  2. Biomass (kitchen scraps, garden waste)
  3. Cow dung
  4. Soil or sand
  5. Dried leaves
  6. Earthworms (red wigglers or European nightcrawlers)
  7. Water
  8. Dry straw or gunny bags

Vermicompost Method

Step-by-Step Process

Choose the Tank

  • Use a plastic or concrete tank.
  • The size should match the amount of raw material you have.

Prepare the Biomass

  • Collect biomass and sun-dry it for 8-12 days.
  • Chop the dried biomass into small pieces.

Make Cow Dung Slurry

  • Mix cow dung with water to make a slurry.
  • Sprinkle the slurry over the chopped biomass to speed up decomposition.

Layer the Tank

  • Add a 2-3 inch layer of soil or sand at the bottom of the tank.
  • Add a layer of partially decomposed cow dung, dried leaves, and other biodegradable waste on top of the soil.

Add More Layers

  • Continue layering chopped bio-waste and cow dung until the tank is 0.5-1.0 feet deep.

Introduce Earthworms

  • Place the earthworms on top of the compost mixture.
  • Cover the mixture with dry straw or gunny bags.

Maintain Moisture

  • Regularly sprinkle water to keep the compost moist.
  • Ensure it is neither too dry nor too wet.

Protect the Compost

  • Cover the tank with a thatch roof.
  • This keeps out ants, lizards, mice, snakes, and protects from rain and direct sunlight.

Monitor the Compost

  • Check the compost frequently.
  • Ensure proper moisture and temperature to avoid overheating.

Harvest

  • After 90-120 days,  the raw material will have turned into kechua khad.
  • You’ll notice 4000 to 5000 new worms in the mixture.

Benefits

  • Improves soil structure, texture, and aeration.
  • Promotes healthier and faster plant growth.
  • Reduces landfill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Requires minimal investment and maintenance.

Disadvantage

Maintenance Required: Have to monitor worms and composting process regularly to see it is going right way or not.

Odor Management: Your compost pit or dig or bin produce unpleasent odor if not managd properly.

Pest Attraction: You have to be careful from fruit flies and rodents.

Time Consuming: Takes too much time to prepare.

Vermicompost vs. Compost: What’s the Difference?

While both compost and vermi khad are organic fertilizers, kechua khad contains higher levels of

Nitrogen,

Phosphorus and

Potassium (NPK ratio)

compared to compost making it more nutrient-dense.

Vermi composting also produces compost faster due to the worms’ digestion process.

Price and Availability

It prices vary based on quality and packaging. You can find khechua khad at local gardening stores, online, or even from nearby farmers practicing vermiculture. The price generally ranges from $10 to $30 per bag, depending on the size and brand.

Usage

As Fertilizer: Mix vermi fertilizer with soil in a 1:4 ratio for general gardening.

Top Dressing: Sprinkle around the base of plants for an extra nutrient boost.

Potting Mix: Combine with potting soil to enhance indoor plant growth.

Common Questions (FAQ)

What is the NPK Ratio in Vermicompost?

It typically has an NPK ratio of around 1-0.5-0.8, depending on the feedstock and conditions.

What is the cost of 1 kg vermicompost?

It ranges from $0.50 to $2.00, depending on quality and location.

Does vermicompost have NPK?

Yes, it contains NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium) but in lower concentrations than chemical fertilizers.

How many worms are in 1 kg?

Approximately 1000-2000 worms are in 1 kg, depending on the worm species and size.

Which is better, cocopeat or vermicompost?

Vermicompost is better for nutrient content

Cocopeat is better for improving soil aeration and moisture retention.

They can be used together for best results.

What are the three types of vermicompost?

Three types include:

  • Home-based
  • Small-scale or community-based
  • Industrial-scale

Khechua Khad.

Conclusion

It is an accessible and sustainable way to manage organic waste and enhance your garden’s productivity. By following these simple steps, you can create a thriving vermicompost system that benefits both the environment and your plants.
